Sometimes we experience challenges in life that affect our sense of wellness and ability to live life to the fullest. Talking with a professionally trained counsellor can help you make sense of your experience in a safe and supportive space. Counselling can bring new perspectives to your thinking and support you with any changes you may find helpful.
Counselling can also provide a space just to share how you are feeling.
How can counselling help?
Counselling can be useful for those seeking support with:
Mental health distress such as depression or anxiety
Problematic relationships
Grief and loss
Life transitions
Post traumatic stress
Childhood trauma / sexual abuse
Self esteem
Unplanned pregnancy
A variety of therapies can be drawn on to support you through your individual experience. There is no “expert” in the counselling relationship as you are the expert of your life!
Counselling is completely confidential.
If it may help and with your consent, the social worker can refer and collaborate with other helping professionals to create a wrap-around holistic environment to support your healing.
What does a session look like?
A counselling session is usually 45 minutes. The first session involves getting to know each other, just like any new relationship. You can share as much or as little of your current experience in a safe and confidential space. Subsequent sessions validate your experience and help to support you to unpack your situation, challenge your thinking and explore new ways of moving ahead. You may decide to attend sessions regularly, or make a one-off appointment; the service is driven by you. Telephone or Skype counselling is also available.
